- To provide a critical framework, allowing you to situate and justify the relevance and importance of social approaches to understanding health and illness. - To trace the development and continuing impact of theoretical perspectives in the Sociology of Health and Illness. - To evaluate medicalisation as a social critique and explore related attitudes within medicine and healthcare. - To analyse socio-economic patterns in explanations of health and illness among diverse groups and communities and in international perspective. - To compare and contrast diverse societal attitudes towards health and responses to illness and debate the role of social cohesion in promoting health and wellbeing. - To critically explore the role of medicine and professionalisation of health and healthcare in society. - To examine the ways in which Covid-19 is experienced within societies, how it transformed our perceptions and changed healthcare and everyday practices.
