Midwives have the rewarding but challenging role of supporting families through pregnancy, birth and the postnatal period. Learn vital teamwork and decision-making skills through problem-based learning. Get hands-on experience with our realistic birthing mannequin and birthing canal, preparing you for real-world scenarios.

Our experienced midwife lecturers and mentors will help you develop the competencies and skills required to become a practising midwife. 

Choose from two midwifery routes, both approved by the Nursing and Midwifery Council:

  • BSc (Hons) Midwifery – if you’re studying a degree for the first time
  • MSc Midwifery – if you’ve already graduated from your first degree and are looking to return to university to train for a career as a midwife

Funding your studies

Healthcare students can receive a Training Grant of £5,000 a year in funding. This is part of the NHS Learning Support Fund.

Eligible courses include midwifery, nursing, occupational therapy, paramedicine, and physiotherapy.

You may also be eligible to additional payments worth up to £3,000 per year.

Our facilities

Our birthing mannequin enables you to experience realistic fetal palpation, to understand the process of contractions, and to deliver a baby through a lifelike birthing canal.

Where Midwifery can take you

Midwifery is a rewarding career which provides graduates with many opportunities to develop and advance professionally, as well as make a real difference to people's lives. Midwives often work in teams and provide care to patients and their families in hospitals and the community.

As a registered midwife you'll have the opportunity to work in a variety of settings, including:

  • Hospitals
  • Labour wards
  • Children's centres
  • In the community 
  • Birth centres 
  • Local clinics 

You may also have the opportunity to go into management roles within the NHS, helping to shape the future of midwifery.
